GOP US Rep. Jim Renacci wins 16th Congressional district seat over Betty Sutton

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A first-term Republican congressman in northeast Ohio has won a battle of incumbents.

U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci ousted Democrat Betty Sutton on Tuesday in one of the most closely watched and costliest U.S. House races in the country.

Sutton's district was eliminated as a result of redrawn political maps. It was only one of two House contests in the nation between incumbents.

Both sides and outside groups spent more than $5 million on TV ads in the race between two self-described polar opposites.

Renacci won a close race two years ago when he was one of five Republicans in Ohio who knocked off Democratic incumbents.

He accused Sutton of being too liberal for the district that includes some Cleveland and Akron suburbs.
