School levies get mixed reactions from voters across northeast Ohio

CLEVELAND - How close the Akron school levy was may have been the only shocker, as far as school levies go, in Tuesday's election. Voters narrowly defeated the APS levy. Superintendent David James said earlier if the levy failed, the district would have to find a way to trim $22 million from its budget. A look at healthcare costs will likely be the first option. On the flip side, Nordonia Hills voters passed their school levy, avoiding a state takeover.

Around northeast Ohio, most districts seeking additional money were turned down.

Voters in Ashtabula County approved a levy request for the Ashtabula School District, but turned down a bond request for Buckeye Local.

Schools seeking additional funds were defeated in Lorain County, with the exception of the Oberlin City School District. Bond requests and some renewal levies were also voted down.

In Cuyahoga County, voters said yes to a trio of renewals and a pair of additional levy requests.

Over to Geauga County, where voters rejected all additional school levy requests. Newbury's renewal levy was the only one approved.

Renewal levies in Huron County all received favorable votes.

In Lake County, the Fairport Harbor, Wickliffe and Lake Community College levies passed. All others were defeated, though the margin was close for Willoughby-Eastlake.

Only one district, Wadsworth, winning voter approval in Medina County.

Additional levies in Portage County failed and the only levy voters approved in Stark County was in the Sandy Valley district, though the numbers for Stark do not include absentee ballots.

Wayne County school districts were both winners, though only four votes were cast for the East Holmes school levy.
