A Parma parent found a $9 million problem in the school district's budget following a controversial proposal that would result in laying off 30 teachers, dozens of staff, killing programs and consolidating three high schools into one.
Following the school's announcement of the cuts hundreds of students protested at the Board of Education meeting. The same meeting that school board president, Kathleen Petro resigned at.
Amanda Kanus called those cuts her reason to look closer at the budget.
Kanus told News 5 she poured over Parma's budget with her husband, sitting at her dining room table in the wee hours of the morning. She said she found what she calls, "A 9 million dollar clerical error."
"We knew that was a lot of money to be allocated to one fund," she said.
Parma School's Treasurer, David Crowley, called the $9 million a variance. He said it doesn't make a difference.
"Net effect of zero," he said. Crowley added that the money belonged in another line of the budget.
"The 9 million belonged in payroll accounts," he said.
Crowley's explanation was good enough for Kanus, but she and other Parma parents will keep fighting.
"Everyone is coming together and we are seeing transparency we haven't seen in a long time," she said.
