The number of tuberculosis cases have increased in Ohio from 2013 to 2014 and United States Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) wants President Barack Obama to fund efforts to eliminate the disease.
Brown is scheduled to visit MetroHealth Medical Center's Tuberculosis Clinic Monday to call for full funding of efforts to extinguish the deadly disease. The senator will join Dr. Charles Bark, director of Metro's TB Clinic, who will outline the need for additional resources.
Following Brown's call, the Obama Administration launched a National Action Plan for combating multidrug-resistant tuberculosis last month.
According to the senator's office, though there has been a global decrease in tuberculosis deaths since 1990, more than 4,000 people continue to die from this disease every day. In Ohio, the number of tuberculosis cases has increased from 2013 to 2014 and the rate of cases in Cuyahoga County is the third-highest in the state.
