WASHINGTON - Ohio's two U.S. senators say they were walking separately with colleagues and heard the gunfire near the U.S. Capitol during a police chase that began when a driver tried to breach a White House barrier.
The chase Thursday in Washington ended with police killing the driver, whose motive wasn't clear.
Democrat Sherrod Brown says he was in a group of lawmakers that saw police vehicles speed by and assumed it was a motorcade at first. He says he heard several gunshots and crouched with colleagues behind other cars for protection while the scene played out.
Republican Rob Portman says he also heard the shots while walking with a fellow lawmaker. The Dayton Daily News reports police pushed the pair into a guardhouse until the scene was considered safe.
