No if, ands or butts: Do smoking bans cause more cigarette litter? One study says yes

By now, most people acknowledge smoking is bad for your health. But researchers in San Diego say there’s evidence that suggests it’s bad for the planet too.

That’s because 4.5 trillion cigarette butts now litter the globe, contaminating the environment and our water sources with toxins.

According to the research , bans on indoor smoking may be making the litter problem worse as it pushes people—and their butts—outside more.
