Family dog attacks, kills baby Michigan boy

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. - A family dog jumped on a couch, then attacked and killed its owners' 2 ½ month-old baby, according to authorities in southeastern Michigan.

The attack happened about 11:40 a.m. Sunday at a home in Oakland County's Springfield Township, about 30 miles north-northwest of Detroit, WDIV-TV ( ) reported.

The baby boy's 18-year-old uncle was holding the baby on the couch when the dog tried to jump onto the couch, authorities said. They said the uncle pushed the dog off, but it jumped back on and attacked the boy's head and throat.

"This is a tragic incident and it is a sad reminder to keep animals away from small children and babies no matter what the circumstances may be," said Sheriff Michael Bouchard. "Animal behavior, whether intended as playful or territorial, can have devastating impact on small children."

The baby's 26-year-old father was injured while prying open the dog's jaws, authorities said. They said the boy was taken to Genesys Regional Medical Center in Genesee County's Grand Blanc Township. The baby then was airlifted to William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, where he died.

Authorities plan to euthanize the dog, a 3 ½-year-old female Catahoula hound. The family had owned it about 2 years. Dogs of the Catahoula breed can reach 40 to 90 pounds.
