ORLANDO, Fla. - A dorm at the University of Central Florida in Orlando was evacuated early Monday morning after a man's body, an improvised explosive device and an assault rifle were found in a dorm, according to UCF officials.
The university's main campus is closed while police investigate.
UCF Police were responding to a fire alarm call about 12:20 a.m. Monday when they were notified of a man with a gun. When they arrived, they found the gunman who reportedly died of a self-inflicted gun shot, according to UCF officials.
"Police have found a suspicious device in Tower 1 (
map )," an alert to UCF students stated at 4:40 a.m. Police later said the device was found inside a parking garage across the street from the dorm.
Officials said the first
alert was sent out at 2:45 a.m.
In a press conference around 5:30 a.m., a UCF official told our Orlando sister station WFTV that the gunman apparently shot and killed himself in the dorm.
At least one assault weapon and a possibly explosive device were found as police investigated the shooting.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office's bomb squad has responded to the dorm to investigate the device.
UCF officials said 500 students were evacuated from the dorm overnight. UCF Spokesperson Chad Binette said Tower 1 was the only evacuated dorm, but a parking garage was also evacuated twice: when the shooting was reported and again when the device was located.
According to the university's website and
social media , counselors are available in the UCF Recreation and Wellness Center annex and the Student Union "to talk with students who need assistance." Students were encouraged to use the facilities to get out of the cold.
"UCF's main campus is closed for classes and employees until noon" an updated emergency alert stated at 6:05 a.m. "Essential personnel should report to work."
The UCF Arena will open at 7 a.m. for students, officials added. Counselors and food will be made available.
