Former Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was suspended for four games in the 2016 season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, a source confirmed to ESPN.

According to ESPN, Manziel's four-game suspension went into effect immediately. If he signs with a team, he would be suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season and conceivably could play in Week 5.

ESPN said Manziel is a free agent after being released by the Cleveland Browns earlier in 2016.
