A car slammed into a crowd at an outdoor concert in Ohio injuring nine people, two of them seriously.
It happened Sunday in Parma Heights around 7 p.m. in Greenbriar Commons, right next to the police and fire department, about 10 miles south of Cleveland.
Police said a 74-year-old woman who was leaving the community concert for senior citizens accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake as she was pulling out of her parking space. Police say she then drove onto a small dance floor in the parking lot at the concert and crashed into a crowd. The woman then backed up into a minivan.
"A lot of people knew the victims, so it [the concert] ended abruptly," said Sgt. Steve Scharschmidt of the Parma Heights police department.
Six people were taken to area hospitals, two of them with serious injuries. Three others were treated at the scene.
"We get elderly crowds for this concert so I would put their ages at 60s and 70s," Scharschmidt said.
Charges have not been filed. The investigation is ongoing.
"I drove by, and I said 'I think I'll skip this time,'" said Rick Kalister, a Parma resident who attends the summer concerts regularly. "I'm happy, lucky I didn't go."
Police said the 74-year-old woman was not feeling well and was leaving the concert early. About 100 people were in attendance at the time of the incident.
