Friday marks 76 years of National Doughnut Day, free doughnut deals

CLEVELAND - It's that time of year again – time for doughnut lovers to rejoice.

National Doughnut Day (or donut depending on your preference) is on the first Friday of June each year. Friday June 7, 2013 will mark the 76th annual National Doughnut Day in the U.S.

While it's not exactly a holiday that will get you a day off of work, it's a day for donut connoisseurs to partake in the goodness of a freshly-frosted little bundle of fried dough, often for free.

National Doughnut Day is not just a ploy to get more customers into the local bakery or doughnut establishment—it is in fact a real celebration ---recognized on the first Friday in June every year.

In 1938, National Doughnut Day was created by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I as part of a fundraising effort during the Great Depression.

Many area establishments are taking part in the celebration:

- Participating Krispy Kreme chains are giving away one doughnut per customer on Friday with no purchase necessary.  You can check out a list of participating locations here .
- Participating Dunkin' Donuts (the most visible chain in Northeast Ohio) are offering a free doughnut with any beverage purchase.
- Smokey Bones Bar & Fire Grill will honor the holiday by donating $1 to The Salvation Army for every order of its signature Hot Bag O' Donuts on Friday at all restaurants across the country.
