CLEVELAND - William Nichols was arraigned Wednesday morning in the death of a 19-year-old woman who had pulled over to the side of the road to deal with a flat tire.
Nichols, 65, pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, driving under the influence and failure to stop after an accident.
According to police, the victim, Kiara Rodriguez, and two of her friends were driving on Interstate 90 in Euclid when they got a flat tire last month. After pulling over to the shoulder and checking traffic, Rodriguez exited the car and was fatally struck by Nichols.
Nichols was given a Breathalyzer test that registered a blood-alcohol content of .116.
The defendant was released on a $50,000 bond with court supervised release that requires drug and alcohol testing.
Judge John O'Donnell was assigned the case and will have a pre-trial hearing on Aug. 28.
