Sentencing day for Put-In-Bay killer who took life of Westlake man on vacation

Man who pleaded guilty faces 16 years

CLEVELAND - A man faces 16 years in prison for killing a Westlake man on Put-In-Bay.

Zachary Brody, 27, is scheduled for sentencing in Ottawa County Court at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. NewsChannel5 crews will be in court when the judge delivers Brody's sentence.

Brody pleaded guilty in March to involuntary manslaughter and two counts of tampering with evidence.

Brody, of Bowling Green, killed Phillip Masterson, 25, of Westlake during Labor Day weekend in 2011.

The two were guests at the same resort in different cabins. Police said the strangers got into a fight.

When he entered his guilty pleas, Brody told the judge, "I began hitting him, I don't know how many times I hit him. But at some point I realized he wasn't fighting back anymore."

Masterson was reported missing over the holiday weekend. Relatives found his body two days later under a tarp in the woods behind the cottage he was renting.

This case was the first killing on Put-In-Bay in decades.

Check later this afternoon to see if the judge will impose the maximum sentence on Brody.
