Police: Westlake man killed in 'sudden fit of rage' at Put-in-Bay, murder suspect arrested

PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio - Police in Ottawa County said an arrest has been made in the murder of a 25-year-old Westlake man who was killed in a "sudden fit of rage" at Put-in-Bay.

Zachary Brody, 27, of Bowling Green, was arrested at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at his home following Philip Masterson's death earlier this week, according to a news release from the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.

Masterson's mother reported her son missing on Monday at about 6 p.m. She told officers he was with a group of friends and she had not her from him. She said she believed her son had been missing since midnight the same day.

Search crews found Masterson's body Tuesday at 3:02 p.m. behind the Island Club on Put-in-Bay Road.

"We were searching for a lost person and we found him. He had been murdered," said the caller to 911.

Investigators said Masterson's body was covered with a brown canvas when it was found face down in the woods. He was only wearing green shorts when he was discovered.

According to the sheriff's office, detectives interviewed several people who had contact with Masterson while he was at Put-in-Bay, which ultimately led them to a person of interest.

Brody has been charged with murder, voluntary manslaughter and felonious assault.

The criminal complaint stated that Brody "while under the influence of sudden passion or in a sudden fit of rage, either of which was brought on by serious provocation occasioned by the victim that is sufficient to incite said Zachary J. Brody into using deadly force, did knowingly cause the death of another.

Masterson's cause of death has not yet been determined. An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday at the Lucas County Coroner's Office.
