Rittman fire caused by meth lab found at same home for second time in a week

RITTMAN, Ohio - After further investigation by Rittman police and fire departments, a Tuesday morning house fire on Liberty Street was caused by the manufacturing of methamphetamine.

Early in the investigation Rittman Fire Chief Don Sweigart told NewsChannel5 that the fire was not believed to be caused by the manufacture meth.

Rittman police and fire were assisted by the MedWay Drug Enforcement Agency in the removal and investigation into Tuesday's meth lab discovery and fire.

This is the second time in less than a week that a meth lab has been discovered in the home at 41 Liberty Street.

The first meth lab was discovered after a search warrant was served on April 4 by Rittman police and MedWay DEA. In that incident, six children were removed from the home and a man and woman were arrested.

According to Rittman police, Tuesday's fire was ignited by the manufacture of meth in the basement. A woman was arrested during the investigation Tuesday.

The State Fire Marshall said the fire caused less than $10,000 in damage.
