A raccoon has tested positive for rabies in Wayne County according to the Wayne County Health Department.
The raccoon was found in the Shreve area, and the health department says this is significant because Wayne County has not had a positive raccoon in 25 years.
While there hasn't been any human exposure, it's possible that some pets were exposed to rabies. In response to the recent discovery, the health department is recommending all pets be vaccinated for rabies, and pet owners check to make sure their vaccination is up to date.
Regulation in Wayne County requires all dogs to be vaccinated. The health department is also cautioning against approaching oddly behaving raccoons, coyotes or other animals.
