The Wayne County Sheriff's Department is trying to track down crooks who broke into an animal clinic and stole thousands of high-powered pain pills and liquid tranquilizers.
The break-in occurred at Country Corner Animal Clinic on Kidron Road in Kidron Monday night or Tuesday morning. A back door was forced open, according to investigators.
Some of the medications were stolen after the thieves busted open a locked cabinet. Other drugs were taken from a safe after a crow bar was used to pry it open.
When one of the workers showed up on Tuesday, she noticed that some items had been moved and others were missing.
"Our reaction is it's crazy what drug users and dealers will do to get what they want," said Debbie Lacy, a receptionist at the clinic.
According to Capt. Doug Hunter of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, 2,400 Tramadol pills and nearly 1,400 Phenobarbital pills were taken.
Liquid Ketamine and liquid Fentanyl also went missing.
In addition, a small amount of the opiate antidote Narcan was stolen was from the building, according to Hunter.
The sheriff's office has no suspects at this time.
“It’s a concern because there’s a large amount of high-powered animal medication that is now on the streets and it could be used for human consumption," said Capt. Hunter.
Deputies suspect that some of the stolen drugs will be mixed in with heroin, sold and add to an epidemic that is already plaguing many cities.
"Many of these drugs can be deadly if they're utilized by individuals on the street who have not received proper training in their application," Hunter said.
