WOOSTER, Ohio - A neighbor and family acquaintance of 9-year-old Reann Murphy, who was found dead in a Wayne County dumpster last winter, was sentenced to serve two life sentences after he pleaded guilty to her murder.
Jerrod Metsker, 24, pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, kidnapping and rape in court Wednesday. He will not be allowed parole.
Reann Murphy was reported missing in December 2013. Police said Murphy was last seen playing outdoors at 5:30 p.m. near her family’s Smithville home.
According to Wayne County Sheriff Travis Hutchinson, deputies from his department responded to the family's home at 5912 Akron Road shortly after 8 p.m. Deputies, along with firefighters, civilians and police searched the area for hours.
At approximately 1:35 a.m. on Sunday, police found the body of a small child in a trash dumpster near Murphy’s home.
Metsker, the last person seen with Murphy, took part in the search and called 9-1-1 after Reann went missing.
The two were building a snowman together.
