Jerrod Metsker, the 24-year-old man charged with the murder of 9-year-old Reann Murphy, pleaded not guilty at his video arraignment Thursday morning.
Reann was reported missing in Smithville the evening of December 14. Hours later, around 1:35 a.m. on December 15, they found her body in a dumpster near the family's home.
Metsker was arrested the same day Reann’s body was found. He was indicted December 20 on two counts of aggravated murder, three counts of kidnapping and two counts of rape, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's office.
Thursday, the girl’s father told NewsChannel5 he hadn’t seen his daughter since Thanksgiving and hadn’t known she was missing until police knocked on his door that weekend.
He says he’s separated from Reann’s mother and his daughter was supposed to be visiting him the weekend she disappeared.
Metsker remains in jail on $1 million bond, which originally set shortly after his arrest. He could be facing the death penalty.
His next appearance in court has not yet been scheduled.
