Police say a man suspected of stealing a donation jar with an estimated $1,000 from an Ohio library has been arrested on a probation violation from a stolen-property case.

Dover Public Library staff inspired by the book "Christmas Jars" had collected cash for an anonymous holiday gift to a needy family. A man swiped the jar Tuesday, and some of the money was found Wednesday in the library's book drop with a handwritten apology.

The Times-Reporter says people who saw the surveillance video pointed police to the 24-year-old Dover man arrested Thursday at a home.

"Christmas Jars" author Jason Wright of Woodstock, Virginia, said earlier that he'd like to buy the thief lunch and explain the jars' charitable purpose. He also encouraged online followers to support the library's fundraising.
