DOVER TOWNSHIP, Ohio - An 85-foot-deep sinkhole closed roads in Dover Township Thursday afternoon.
About 40 to 50 feet of state Route 516 collapsed for the sinkhole, which is 200 feet long and 100 feet wide, ODOT said. Crews closed the road between Bair Road and Josephine Street. Bair Road was also closed, as a precaution.
"A section of SR 516 has eroded due to the pond failure. Our engineers are currently reviewing the extent of damage to the roadway to determine necessary repairs," said ODOT District 11 Deputy Director Lloyd MacAdam, in a news release.
ODOT said it was caused by a dredging machine during a sand and gravel operation nearby.
Photos sent to NewsChannel5 by ODOT show large chucks of the roadway that slid into the hole.
Traffic has been detoured on state Route 39 and state Route 93. Drivers should expect delays and SR 516 will remain closed until further notice.
