Tallmadge woman pleads guilty to OVI in wrong-way crash that killed mother of three

AKRON, Ohio - A Tallmadge woman pleaded guilty after the crash on Interstate 76 that killed the wife of an Akron firefighter.

On Sept. 6, 51-year-old Phyllis Treich drove the wrong way on I-76 eastbound, Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh said. After about a mile, Treich hit the car driven by Karon Briggs, 55.

Briggs's car was sent into another lane of traffic and hit by a second vehicle, Bevan Walsh said.

Briggs died in surgery after the crash. The mother of three was the wife of Akron Fire Lt. Kerry Briggs.

Treich and the three people in the other car were not injured. Tests at Akron General Hospital reported Treich's blood-alcohol level was .181.

On Friday, Treich pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide, operating under the influence and three counts of negligent assault. She will be sentenced on April 3.
