An entire community was left stunned Wednesday when a student was hit and killed by school bus right outside Norton High School.

The crash happened in the 3200 block of Greenwich Road around 3 p.m.

According to Norton Police, a 16-year-old Norton High School student died at the scene.

The boy was riding his skateboard next to the bus when he tripped and fell in front of it.

The bus was full of eighth-grade students from the middle school at the time.

Norton Schools Superintendent Dave Dunn issued the following statement in response to the accident:

A Norton High School student was fatally injured in a traffic accident Wednesday afternoon. School will be in session tomorrow and Friday with counselors available.  No specifics are being released while the accident is under investigation.

Fellow students, including Jessica McShane, set up a small vigil with flowers near the scene of the crash.

"We're all here for him, even though he's not here," said McShane.  "We're all praying for him, at least he's in a better place."
