Sheriff's deputies in Summit County arrest, charge man pretending to be police officer

GREEN, Ohio - A Springfield Township man known as "John Kidd" is in trouble for allegedly pretending to be a police officer.

Summit County sheriff's deputies say Sean Duffy, 48, first tried to get an auto repair shop to install police lights on his Crown Victoria. The mechanic told authorities the man had handcuffs and a badge on his belt that said "POLICE."

Four days later, the same vehicle was seen at a Giant Eagle parking lot in Green, Authorities said the car had a dash camera and police radios, the license plates were expired and shoppers expressed concern the person may be a phony.

On March 25, deputies arrested Duffy for impersonating a police officer. An investigation revealed Duffy had no prior police training.

Authorities also said Duffy was pulled over at least four times the previous week, noting during one stop he was a retired sheriff's deputy and retired Canton police officer.

Duffy pleaded not guilty in Barberton Municipal Court and a $5,000 signature bond was set Tuesday.
