The search for a missing teen who disappeared into the waters of Portage Lakes Wednesday afternoon was called off Wednesday night.

According to the Summit County Sheriff's Office, an 18-year-old woman told authorities that she and her boyfriend had been swimming off a boat near the Akron Yacht club around 2:20 p.m. when the boat began to drift away. Her boyfriend was unable to swim back to the boat.

The woman said she attempted to rescue him but was unable to locate him after he went fully under the water.

As of Thursday morning, the missing swimmer hadn’t resurfaced, according to officials.

The ODNR, Akron Fire Department, New Franklin Fire Department and Summit County Sheriff's Department were among the agencies who assisted in the search.

The Coventry Fire Department and the Summit County Sheriff's Office resumed the search Thursday morning.
