Police officers treated for smoke inhalation after saving woman from Macedonia house fire

MACEDONIA, Ohio - Three police officers were treated for smoke inhalation after rescuing a disabled woman from a house fire in Macedonia.

The officers were the first on the scene of the Shepard Avenue fire Friday evening and rushed in to save the woman. All three officers were taken to area hospitals for smoke inhalation and one is being kept overnight at Akron General Hospital.

"I think they did a good job," said Macedonia Fire Chief Tim Black. "They put themselves at risk to go inside and get her out."

The officers are Sgt. Vince Danko and Patrolmen Nick Szaibel and Brandon Heisler.

A woman, her 9-year-old grandson and the disabled friend she was caring for lived in the house, which is a total loss.

The woman's dogs and a Guinea pig died in the fire.

Firefighters had a difficult time controlling the blaze and called to aid from Twinsburg, Aurora, Bedford, Bedford Heights and Oakwood.
