Six inmates were taken to an Akron hospital after suspected drug overdoses overnight.
According to authorities, the symptoms indicated the substance used was synthetic marijuana.
The inmates were housed at a treatment center run by Oriana House on East Crosier Street in Akron. Oriana House, Inc. is a non-profit agency that provides community corrections and substance abuse treatment services.
Oriana House officials said two of the men have been treated and released. The other four are still being evaluated. Information on their conditions is not available at this time.
Following the overdoses, staff members at the treatment center have restricted the movement of clients, allowing them to leave only for approved employment and medical appointments. Facility searches and pat downs are also being conducted.
“We constantly monitor our clients and our facilities to take every effort to keep drugs out of our programs," said Oriana Executive Vice President Bernie Rochford. "But like many jails and prisons that have recently reported overdoses, Oriana House is a community based program and is not immune to drugs getting into our facilities.”
Law enforcement continues to investigate the incidents.
