The mother and grandmother of a 16-year-old suspected overdose victim were arraigned on involuntary manslaughter charges in Barberton Municipal Court on Friday.
Police said Andrew Frye was found dead in a Green, Ohio Super 8 hotel early Wednesday morning.
Summit County Medical Examiner Dr. Lisa Kohler said the boy’s body tested positive for heroin and fentanyl in a preliminary screening.
Frye’s friend, Jessica Irons, was also charged with tampering with evidence and drug possession.
Brenda Frye, Andrew’s grandmother, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, corrupting another with drugs and trafficking heroin.
Brenda Frye's friend, Donald Callaghan, was charged with drug possession.
Summit County Sheriff Steve Barry said the suspects had a hand in obtaining and distributing the drugs that likely caused the teen’s death.
“I made a really stupid decision and I’m probably going to have to pay for it the rest of my life,” Heather Frye told Judge Jill Flagg Lanzinger in her video arraignment.
Lanzinger set a $500,000 bond for both Heather and Brenda Frye. Jessica Irons received a $100,000 bond.
All three were scheduled to appear in court on April 13.
Callaghan has yet to be arraigned and a no contact order was issued for the defendants.
