Summit County officials are trying to figure out what happened in the hours before a teenager was found dead in a hotel room Wednesday evening.
According to the Summit County Sheriff's Office, a woman called 911 from the Super 8 at 1605 Corporate Woods Pkwy, in Green around 6:45 p.m., stating that she found the 16-year-old boy unresponsive in a room.
The sheriff's office and the Green Fire Department responded and pronounced the boy, identified as Andrew Frye, dead at the scene.
According to the medical examiner, Frye was lying next to the bed. Officials said there were no signs of trauma.
Authorities said Frye was staying the night in the hotel with his mother, Heather Frye, and his mother's friend.
The cause of death has not yet been determined, but the medical examiner's report indicates the boy's death is being investigated as a possible heroin overdose.
According to the report, investigators found drug paraphernalia, syringes and potential illicit drugs inside the room where the boy died. Heather told police they had checked into the hotel to go swimming, the report states. All 3 of them used heroin, according to the report.
The boy used a syringe to inject heroin, the report states. His mother reportedly told police he went into the bathroom to inject it because she doesn't like to watch him use.
The mother's friend woke up to find the boy unconscious, which is when 911 was called.
Investigators are also looking into a report that the heroin was purchased by the boy's grandmother.
"There have been no charges filed and no arrests made, but there may be charges pending the outcome of the investigation," said Inspector Bill Holland.
The autopsy took place on Thursday, but the Summit County Medical Examiner said final toxicology results could take up to eight weeks.
Andrew was enrolled in the Akron Public School District as an online student.
Before that, he was a student at Green High School.
