Funeral services planned for Barberton teens killed

Teens will be laid to rest Wed. Jan. 8

BARBERTON, Ohio - Funeral services will be held on Wed.  Jan. 8 for Ashley Nicole Hope Carpenter, 18, and David John Ernest Carpenter-Kohler, 14, of Barberton.

Carpenter and Carpenter-Kohler were shot during a robbery at their home on New Year’s Eve. John Kohler, 42, the stepfather and father, respectively, of Ashley and David was also shot and died several days later in an Akron hospital.

Barberton police said Michael Deon Hendon, 22, and his brother Eric Donta Hendon, 30, went to the family’s home on 7th Street NE to rob them of drugs and money on Dec. 31.  John Kohler's girlfriend Ronda Blankenship was also shot and remains hospitalized.

Ashley and David’s funeral will take place on Wed. Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. at Apostolic Church, 1717 Turkeyfoot Lake Rd. (St. Rt. 619) in Barberton.  The service will be officiated by Pastor Paul J. Pamer and Pastor Bobby Webb. Family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. prior to the service at Apostolic Church.

According to their obituary posted on the Cox Funeral Home of Barberton’s website, Ashley was a senior at Barberton High School where she working towards her graduation in May. She was very active in the high school band and was engaged to be married to Mark Szilagyi.

David attended Barberton Middle School, where he was in the 8th grade. He also worked hard in school and was a member of the band.

Both Ashley and David enjoyed hanging out with friends, laughing, listening to music, playing video games and football.
