AKRON, Ohio - The first Akron Bike Party is already a success.
The ride it is patterned after, the San Jose, (Calif.) Bike Party, only had nine riders show up when it began, Akron had more than 50 riders Friday night.
Rides in Sacramento and San Jose now draw thousands. Cyclists in party rides decorate their bikes and play music along their route.
“It’s about building community through cycling,” said Dave Massary, Akron Bike Party organizer.
Massary decided to start the Akron ride after doing one of the San Jose rides, he wanted to bring that spirit back home to Akron.
“It’s a circus, get as much entertainment as you can,” Massary said. “Success for the ride would be just for it to exist.”
Designed as a fun tour of Akron, riders of varying skill levels left Lock 3 Park at 8 p.m. for Highland Square.
Cyclists were given a route list and 14 rules of safe and responsible cycling.
Massary said the rides will take place each third Friday of the month through September.
The Bike Kitchen gave each cyclist a light set for their safety. The sets were provided to the Bike Kitchen by the Ohio Department of Transportation.
