Akron apartment caught fire Saturday after reported lightning strike, approx. 20 residents displaced

AKRON, Ohio - A reported lightning strike is to blame for a Saturday afternoon fire that forced approximately 20 residents from their homes.

Firefighters responded to the Timber Top Apartments on Amber Hills Drive near Portage Trail at around 4:50 p.m. for a report of a building on fire due to a lightning strike.

Two residents told NewsChannel5 they heard a loud boom that shook the building like an earthquake, just moments before noticing that the building's roof had caught fire. Everyone made it out safely.

Cuyahoga Falls crews helped Akron extinguish the flames. Crews then stayed on scene for about three hours checking for hot spots.

Firefighters said the displaced residents are being assisted by family members and the American Red Cross.

The fire is still under investigation.
