SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio - An award ceremony is planned for Springfield Township Police Officer Mark Dodez, who was partially paralyzed by a drunk driver.
At 7 Thursday evening, a ceremony is being held at the Springfield Town Hall, at 2459 Canfield Road in Akron.
Dodez will be awarded a Purple Heart and a retirement badge.
Dodez was injured on March 30, 2011. Michael Plemons was drunk when he crossed the yellow line on Arlington Road in Springfield Township, hitting Officer Dodez, who was outside his patrol car.
The crash left Dodez paralyzed from the waist down. He now relies on a wheelchair to get around.
Plemons was sentenced to six years in prison, which is the maximum sentence allowed under law. The Iraq War veteran, who claims to suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, did apologize to Dodez in court.
