Akron's Lock 3 Christmas tree downed during Hurrican Sandy

AKRON - The Downtown Akron Partnership will be lighting up the night sky of Downtown Akron's Lock 3 with the city's official Christmas Tree.

"This year's tree is special," said Lieberth. "Our crews rescued this fine 30-foot Blue Spruce after Hurricane Sandy knocked it down." The tree was growing at the Sterling Company campus in West Akron. Following the storm, employees of Sterling called Keep Akron Beautiful to see if it could be recycled. And even though they had already selected a 2012 tree for Downtown, city parks maintenance crews recovered the tree and installed it at Lock 3.

The official tree lighting ceremony will be held on Saturday, Nov. 24 at Lock3.
