74-year-old Hudson man who confessed to rape in 1996 denied parole

Parole board recommended Humberson's release

AKRON, Ohio - A Hudson man who admitted to raping young relatives in 1996 was denied parole on Thursday.

Ward Melvin Humberson, 74, was caught by his own while simulating sex on a female relative who was crying for him to stop, the Summit County Prosecutor's office said.

He confessed to repeatedly raping and molesting the girl and several others. Humberson pleaded guilty to rape and was sentenced to 25 years in prison with the eligibility for parole in 10 years.

The prosecutor's office said the Ohio Parole Board recommended that Humberson be released from prison this year, but statements from the victim's family delayed his released for another three years.

"When Ward Humberson confessed to sexually assaulting his victim, he showed absolutely no remorse and was, in fact, arrogant, as if this young girl and the other young girls he assaulted over the years had intentionally seduced him," said prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh in a news release on Thursday. "Humberson is the typical child molester who blames the victim for ‘asking for it.'"

If Humberson's future parole bids are all denied, he will be released from prison in February 2021 at the age of 82.
