SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio - A 16-year-old boy was killed Tuesday night when he was struck by a car that fled the scene.
The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office said that Anthony Weakland, of Springfield Township, was walking eastbound on Albrecht Avenue when he was hit.
Weakland was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:53 p.m.
The medical examiner's office is planning an autopsy for Wednesday.
According to Springfield Schools, Weakland was a student at the high school. Superintendent Bill Stauffer issued this statement Wednesday afternoon:
"I am saddened to report that we lost a member of our high school student body last evening. Anthony Weakland, a student at Springfield High School was struck and killed by a hit and run driver. Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to the Weakland family.
"We will have counselors from the school and community available this evening from 6-8 p.m.at Springfield Church of the Brethren located at 3500 Albrecht Ave. Friends and family are invited to come as needed to talk, share and receive support.
"A candlelight vigil will also be held at 9:30 p.m.
"Please keep the Weakland family in your thoughts and prayers in this difficult time."
The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the traffic death.
