A man was arrested in connection with a fatal hit-skip earlier this month on Monday night.

Stark County Sheriff's Office deputies were on routine patrol in Plain Township when they pulled over a Mercury Grand Marquis for a traffic stop after they saw it drive into the left lane.

Deputies noticed damage on the right side of the windshield and to the mirror that was consistent with damage that deputies believed to be from a fatal hit-skip crash from Oct. 4 on U.S. 62 and Middlebranch Avenue.

After talking to the driver, 22-year-old, Joe Matthew Wilds he admitted to being involved in the hit-skip crash. Wilds was issued a citation for traveling into the left lane and booked into the Stark County Jail for the hit-skip.

Police said Dennis Slaton, 60, of Canton, was trying to cross Route 62 near Middlebranch Road in Plain Township around 10 p.m. when he was hit by a car and killed.

The crash remains under investigation by the Stark County Sheriff's Office, anyone with information related to the crash should contact them at 330-430-3800.
