A man has died after crashing a pickup truck and trailer into an ambulance Thursday morning.

According to the Chardon Highway Patrol Post, a man was driving a pickup truck that was towing a trailer with a car on it when he struck an ambulance owned by the Perry Township Fire Department on South Ridge Road, east of Davis Road.

The driver of the truck, 52-year-old Douglas Shipman of Painesville, was following another car that had stopped to yield to the ambulance which was responding to another car crash. Shipman was unable to stop in time and traveled left of center to strike the ambulance.

The driver of the truck was killed on impact. His passenger Jacob Shipman, 21,  was transported to TriPoint Medical Center.

The ambulance driver, Charles Eisenhart, 51, from Perry and his passenger Carmen Tibaldi, 36, from Painesville both sustained minor injuries and were transported to Madison Hospital where they were treated and released.

The highway patrol says that speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash. The incident is still under investigation.
