The man accused of shooting and killing a Canton police K-9 over the weekend will be held in jail on a $5 million bond after he is released from the hospital.
Kelontre Barefield, 22, is facing charges of aggravated burglary and assaulting or harassing a police dog. Added charges include felonious assault on a peace officer, having weapons under disability and shooting on or near a prohibited area. Police said even more charges may be filed.
He is currently at Aultman Hospital in guarded condition.
K-9 Jethro responded with officers to a burglary call at Fisher Foods on Harrison Avenue SW around 1 a.m. Saturday.
Barefield allegedly confronted Jethro and fired several shots. Jethro was struck three times.

Officers fired back, hitting Barefield. He was found nearby in a field with a gunshot wound to the leg.
Authorities announced Sunday morning that Jethro had died from his injuries. Services have been scheduled for Thursday.
According to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, Barefield was locked up on July 9, 2013 for a burglary out of Stark County and for breaking and entering and vandalism out of Cuyahoga County. He was sentenced to a total of one year and nine months in prison. He was released on Feb. 4, 2015.
