House explodes near 7th Street in Canton

CANTON, Ohio - Firefighters spotted blue flames when they arrived at a house explosion in Canton Wednesday night, fire official say.

The explosion happened at a house on Weiler Court near 7th Street NE.

Fire Chief Akbar Bennett said firefighters were careful not to extinguish the fire because the blue flames indicated natural gas and they did not want to trigger another explosion. Crews controlled the fire until the utilities were shut off, Bennett said. Workers from Dominion East Ohio Gas checked each curb stop.

"Two hours ago, I come in here and I sat on my porch before this happened," said Riley Philips, who lives in the home. He said he did not smell gas on his porch. "My landlord said 'Your house just blowed up. I said 'What?'"

"God got my back and my front too. I could have been like done. Toasted," Philips said. He also told NewsChannel5 crews had been working on the gas lines in the area, but Bennett could not confirm that.

Our photographer said the back part of the house completely collapsed and the windows were blown across the street. The house was knocked off its foundation, Bennett said.

The Canton Fire Department started cleaning up extra equipment at about 10:20 p.m. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
