MASSILLON, Ohio - The suspect who allegedly held a woman hostage at the Great Clips in Massillon was shot and killed by authorities Sunday, according to Stark County sheriff's deputies.
Deputies said the suspect came into the Great Clips, located at 2757 Indian River Road around 5 p.m. looking for his girlfriend.
Deputies said when the suspect found out that she wasn't there, he then held an unidentified woman as a hostage.
Massillon police said 911 operators then received a hang-up call for the Indian River Rd. location.
When authorities went to the scene, they said the suspect barricaded himself inside of the salon with the hostage.
The Canton SWAT team was called in to assist.
Deputies said the SWAT team entered the building and shot the suspect.
The Massillon fire captain said the suspect was transported to the hospital, but died.
The fire captain also said that the 23-year-old female hostage was also taken to the hospital, but she was not hurt.
NewsChannel5 spoke with someone who knows the hostage.
"I guess he [the suspect] held her or something and said he was going to blow the place up," said Brooke Walsh. "Other than that she doesn't remember much. She's pretty traumatized at this point and time."
Walsh said the hostage works at the salon.
Names were not given.
