Firefighters battled 2-alarm fire Saturday at Canton apt., 3 people transported, several displaced

CANTON, Ohio - Firefighters are investigating the cause of a Saturday morning Canton apartment fire that sent three people to the hospital, and left several residents without a place to stay.

Crews were dispatched around 7:05 a.m. to Market Ridge Apartments, located in the 100 block of 25th Street NW near Market Avenue, for a report of fire on the first floor of the three-story brick apartment building.

About 40 residents were inside of the 47 unit building when flames broke out.

Officials said firefighters had rescued multiple residents by carrying them to safety and helping them down the ladder.

Firefighters said one woman even jumped from the second floor window. She's expected to be okay due to the help of Canton Paramedic/Firefighter Lonnie Rapalo who helped break the woman’s fall, according to fire officials.

Three people were transported to the hospital to be treated, but information on their injuries was not released.

Crews knocked down the bulk of the fire in about 20 minutes. They then stayed on scene for about two and a half hours checking for hot spots.

About 38 firefighters and paramedics responded to the two-alarm fire.

The American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the displaced residents.

Firefighters said damages are estimated at $450,000.
