CANTON, Ohio - More than 100 people spent the night in the Canton Civic Center after being evacuated from their homes Monday night.
Authorities and the American Red Cross set the temporary evacuation shelter beginning at 6 p.m. Monday.
More than 300 people initially registered to stay at the Civic Center. Overnight, that number diminished to about half of that as some decided to stay with family and friends.
The Red Cross set up cots inside the Civic Center, and organizers said local pizza shops donated food all night so evacuees had something to eat.
The public information officer tells NewsChannel5 the goal is to have displaced residents back in their homes sometime Tuesday morning, but an exact timetable couldn't be given as crews continue to monitor sulfur dioxide levels in the immediate area.
