CANTON, Ohio - Canton City Council voted seven to five against installing traffic cameras to catch speeders and red light runners.
Mayor William Healy said it could have generated as much as $1 million a year and helped to prevent layoffs due to a nearly $4 million budget shortfall for 2013. "It's safety forces that are going to be cut because that's two-thirds of our spending," he said.
Residents who spoke at the meeting were split over the issue.
Some hoped the cameras would help police solve crimes.
Others saw a problem. "I think those cameras are a violation of the Constitution," Dan Fonte said, "because I have no way to cross examine that camera if I want to take it to court."
