MINERVA, Ohio - The Stark County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting death of a 9-year-old boy.
Stark County Sheriff George Mailer said deputies were called to the 16300 block of Maplelane S.E. in Minerva around 5:16 p.m. Friday for a report of a boy who had been shot at the residence
While deputies were en route to the scene, the boy, identified as Matthew Joseph Schreckengaust, was taken to Aultman Hospital in Canton by the Minerva Fire Department where he succumbed to his injuries.
According to police, the boy lived in Canton but was was visiting with relatives when the incident occurred.
The boy and his 14-year-old cousin were alone in a room of the residence when the gun went off.
The owner of the residence on Maplelane is a legal gun owner.
The shooting appears to be accidental and not a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but remains under investigation by the Stark County Sheriff's Office in conjunction with the Stark County Medical Examiner's Office.
"This is a horrific tragedy for the family and the community," said Sheriff Mailer.
There are no arrests or charges at this time.
