ONTARIO, Ohio - A man accidentally struck and killed his 2-year-old daughter Saturday afternoon outside of a Richland County Walmart store.
The accident happened around 5:22 p.m. in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter located at 359 N. Lexington Springmill Road in Ontario, Ohio.
Ontario police said the toddler’s 25-year-old father, Andrew Brooks, pulled the 2001 Chevy Suburban to the front doors of the store to let the family out at the entrance.
He then reportedly pulled the vehicle forward before the 2-year-old got out of the way, accidentally striking her with the vehicle.
Bystanders at the scene performed CPR on the toddler.
Paramedics then responded and rushed 2-year-old La’naya Brooks to the Ohio Health Med Central hospital in Mansfield, where she was pronounced dead at 6:20 p.m. Saturday.
The Richland County Coroner said La’naya appears to have suffered multiple trauma injuries. An autopsy has been scheduled to take place Monday.
Ontario police said the toddler’s father was not arrested; however the investigation is on-going. Alcohol is not suspected as a factor in this fatal crash, according to police.
