KENT, Ohio - Family and friends of Kent State student JJ Marino, who was killed in a spring break crash, have planned a prayer service/vigil tonight outside Marino's off-campus house.
Marino's parents, along with many other family members, will attend the vigil beginning at 9 p.m. at 114 Brady St. in Kent. It will be a time to honor Marino's memory and celebrate his life.
The devastated family said Marino was with friends on spring break when the SUV they were in collided with a Freightliner on I-65 north in Alabama on Saturday afternoon.
Marino wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was killed in the wreck. Four other friends suffered minor injuries.
But the 23-year-old's family believes Marino is OK, as they saw a rainbow outside of Marino's hospital room window when he died, his godmother said.
To help the family pay for the many unexpected costs of burying their loved one, a donation page has been started in Marino's honor by one of his former classmates and hockey teammates, Matt Feda, at Padua High School.
On the online fundraising site, GiveForward, Feda wrote, "JJ was a great friend, son, and teammate; enriching the lives of all those he knew. He will be dearly missed, but certainly remembered."
