Man killed in fog-related accident with passenger train in Portage County identitfied

The Portage County Sheriff is investigating a fatal accident involving a pedestrian and a passenger train Wednesday morning.

Timothy A. Freeland, 53, of Rootstown Township, was walking just outside of the train tracks about a quarter-mile south of Lynn Road around 6:15 a.m. when a train conductor blew his horn to alert the male he was nearing, Sheriff David Doak said.

Freeland kept walking along the outside of the tracks in the fog and waved his arm, signaling he had heard the train coming, but he did not move away from the tracks, and he was fatally struck.

An unknown number of passengers were onboard at the time of the accident but none were injured.

The Portage County Sheriff Department is investigating the incident.
