Two dogs are dead after a fire started in their owners' fifth-wheel camper, Streetsboro Fire Department reported on Tuesday.

According to Lt. Kevin Grim of the Streetsboro Fire Department, a call was received just after 8 a.m. for a fire at Woodside Camp Ground, located at 2468 Frost Rd.

When crews arrived, Grim said, they found a fifth wheel camper with flames showing from the left side. Within a few minutes, it went through the roof.

Grim reported there was heavy smoke inside the camper. Crews opened the door and went in to extinguish the flames. That's when two dogs were found dead.

Firefighters were unable to revive the canines, Grim said. They were identified as a chocolate lab and a teacup Chihuahua.

According to Grim, the dogs' owners, who were from out of state, left the area around 6 a.m. to go to work and told authorities everything was fine at that time.

Grim said the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials said it may have been an electrical issue.

Officials contacted The Red Cross to find shelter for the owners.
