Sheriff: Student in Portage County arrested for holding assault rifle in Facebook profile picture

MANTUA, Ohio - A high school student in Portage County was arrested after deputies said he posted on Facebook a picture of himself holding an assault rifle.

The Portage County Sheriff's Office arrested the 17-year-old Crestwood High School student Tuesday morning.

According to investigators, the school alerted authorities after becoming "aware and concerned" about Facebook postings by this student and that he had his profile picture set to an image of him holding an assault rifle.

The student is facing two counts of inducing panic, one count of aggravated menacing and one count of telecommunications harassment.

The teen is being held in at the Portage/Geauga County Juvenile Detention Facility.

"Both Sheriff Doak and Prosecutor Vigluicci want the residents of Portage County to know that threats of this nature are taken very seriously and will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted," said Lt. Gregory Johnson in a news release.

The sheriff's office and Mantua police worked on the case together.

This arrest was made one day after a student opened fire at Chardon High School, killing three and injuring two others. Students at the school told NewsChannel5 the suspect posted on Twitter about the shooting the night before it happened.
